Rocket Motor for New Space Vehicle Passes Fiery Test in Utah

Posted Wednesday, September 23, 2009

Featured on Episode 2 of the 2009-2010 season

Earlier this month, the rocket motor that will send the Ares I next generation launch vehicle into space underwent a big test in Promontory, Utah. The motor is a newer and longer version of what is now used on the space shuttle - about the length of four school buses. For this test, the Ares first stage motor was mounted horizontally on the ground and blasted flames and dust into the desert sky. NASA and the Alliant Techsystems officials who ran the test were pleased with the results. Engineers at NASA Glenn Research Center right here in Cleveland are working on the upper stage of the Ares I rocket.
