Featured on Episode 1 of the 2009-2010 season
Sarah, the Cincinnati zoo's eight-year-old cheetah, is now the world's fastest of all land mammals. Last week, Sarah broke the record for fastest cheetah in a one hundred meter sprint with a time of 6.16 seconds. Then she broke her own record with a second time of 6.13 seconds. The fastest human time in the 100-meter is 9.69 seconds. Cheetahs are built for speed. According to the zoo, their flexible spine allows their front legs to stretch forward, as they cover up to twenty two feet in one stride. Endangered in the wild, cheetahs are literally running for their lives with only about nine to twelve thousand cheetahs surviving in Africa today.
