Portuguese Water Dog Alerts Family to Fire, Receives Commendation and Cookies

Posted Thursday, April 30, 2009

Featured on Episode 29 of the 2008-2009 season

Last week we told you about the Obama's new dog, Bo. He's a Portuguese water dog, a breed that's considered very athletic and intelligent. They also love to play. The breed's intelligence certainly came into play in California last week. Cabrillo, also a Portuguese water dog, is being hailed as a hero by the San Diego fire rescue department. Thanks to Cabrillo's strong sense of smell, he was able to alert his owner of a fire in their neighborhood. In addition to the ribbon, fire fighters gave Cabrillo a bag of dog biscuits. Cabrillo is almost two years old and his owner says he's a happy dog who loves to do tricks and please people.

Cabrillo, is also enrolled in agility and water training. He also has been invited by the Fire Department to become a representative at local schools to demonstate fire safety moves such as crawling low under smoke to show kids that anyone can practice fire safety-even a dog. Cabrillo, will need to complete his Therapy Training. He is also willing to show Bo Obama how to salute!
