The Columbus Road Lift Bridge in Cleveland will get a new span, it was announced this week. The bridge is on the site of Cleveland's first permanent bridge. The Columbus Street Bridge was completed in 1835, a draw bridge that lifted to let boats pass. The first vertical lift bridge was built on the same site in 1940. This kind of bridge doesn't tip or turn - instead the span goes straight up in the air, parallel to the road. The $49 million dollar project will involve repairing the towers of the bridge, and completely replacing the span that goes over the Cuyahoga River in what is called the "Flats" section of Cleveland. The attached PDF was prepared by the Cuyahoga County Engineer’s Office for a public meeting on the bridge repairs and includes a history of the bridge and different options for repairing the bridge.
