The United States has a huge population of people with Irish ancestry. In honor of the holiday, the fountains on the White House front lawn were dyed green. It was First Lady Michelle Obama's idea, a tribute to her hometown of Chicago where they dye the river green each St. Patrick's Day. Chicago has been dying the Chicago River green for the past 43 years. The city hosts one of the biggest celebrations in the country. But the oldest St. Patrick's Day celebration is in New York City. Their celebration and parade have been going on for the past 247 years.
