Michelin is reinventing the wheel to give us the “tweel” airless tire. It's a conventional tire tread connected to a central wheel connected to flexible spokes. The tweel has some drawbacks. For example, the faster you drive on it, the louder it gets. But it already has applications for slower vehicles like construction vehicles and the iBot mobility system for the disabled, and even the Segway. And when NASA goes to the moon or Mars in the future with manned or robotic vehicles, this new tire will be part of those missions.
