It takes some serious endurance to pull a sled more than one thousand miles through the frozen tundra! Sixty-seven dog sledding teams left Anchorage, Alaska on Saturday for the legendary 1100 mile Iditarod race. The teams met in Willow for what is considered the real start Sunday. They'll race all the way to Nome. Each team has 12 to 16 dogs and a musher - the person who drives the sled. The race takes between 10 and 17 days to complete. The first Iditarod took place in 1973. The race commemorates the importance of the Iditarod Trail to Alaska's history. The trail and sled dogs were once the best way to get around the giant state -- especially during the gold rush of the early 1920s. The trail also became a life line for people during Nome's 1925 diptheria outbreak.
