And the winner is…Slumdog Millionaire! The low-budget film set in an Indian slum took home eight statuettes at the Academy Awards. The underdog film about Mumbai's slum kids and their dreams dominated the Oscars ceremony. This is not a film that children would necessarily see because of the violence. However, two of the children with leading roles in the film drew on their own life experiences to portray their characters. They live in one of the poorest sections of Mumbai. Mallika Kapur got a first hand look at the children's roots.
