What is it with California and mammoth fossils? There must have been a lot of those ancient ancestors of elephants roaming around the Golden State thousands of years ago. Construction crews in San Diego recently uncovered the remains of an 8 foot long mammoth ...after a backhoe operator hit a hard object that was 20 feet below ground level. He uncovered a gigantic tusk. Now, paleontologists from the San Diego History Museum are taking over the excavation. The scientists also uncovered a skull and other bones, which they say appear to be the remains of a Columbian mammoth ....which roamed the earth a half a million years ago. Just a few weeks before that, a California man had stumbled upon mammoth tusks in his own backyard!
