Featured on Episode 20 of the 2008-2009 season
If the U.S. economy is in trouble, the American auto industry is in even worse shape. General Motors and Chrysler asked the Obama administration for even more money on Tuesday. $17.4 billion in federal government loans are riding on their ability to prove they can survive. GM said it will cut 47,000 positions worldwide. The Lordstown plant appears safe, but the future of the plants in Parma, Mansfield, Toledo and Defiance are uncertain. Chrysler said it will cut 3,000 jobs. Both companies have already received billions from the government. They said they need even more aid within six weeks. European and Japanese as well as American car makers have all seen huge drops in sales due to the recession. January's numbers were the worst in 26 years.
