Featured on Episode 18 of the 2008-2009 season
It flies like a plane, drives like a car, and runs on biofuel. It may sound like something from a movie, but a revolutionary new machine designed by British engineers is very real, and has taken to the roads, and skies. It's called the SkyCar. Road legal, all terrain buggy one moment, the next, it can take off under its own power using a rear propeller and a fabric wing. Giles Cardozo says building the SkyCar was his life long dream. In propeller mode, Giles says its cruising speed in the air is 70 miles per hour. Top speed on the road, 120 miles per hour. Now an ambitious expedition is testing the SkyCar's capabilities. The plan is to drive and fly from London, through France, Spain, Morocco, Mauritania and the Sahara Desert to Mali's famously isolated city of Timbuktu. Experienced adventurer Neil Laughton will pilot the craft on its epic journey.
Students will look at the history of flying cars and use creative writing to describe their own voyage on one.
