Featured on Episode 17 of the 2008-2009 season
A man in California recently came across the ancient past in his own back yard. While searching for gold with a metal detector, Greg Riecke stumbled upon two tusks that once belonged to a mammoth or mastodon, the ancestors of elephants. They roamed California during the Ice Age. The tusks could be anywhere from sixteen-thousand to two million years old. A crew from the San Bernadino County Museum has been chiseling away at the dirt surrounding the tusks. The crew has also found ancient bison and turtle fossils.
Students in this week’s lessons will learn more about Mastodons and mammoths and the Ice Age from where they came.
