Temperatures as low as seven degrees helped to create an ice bridge on the lower Niagara River in Ontario, Canada. Ice bridges form when Lake Erie freezes and strong winds push ice into the gorge beneath the American Falls and Canada's Horseshoe Falls. They can happen several times during a winter, depending on the weather. Years ago, ice bridges used to be even more spectacular, but ice booms, which hold back the ice, were installed at the head of the river. In the past, tourists looking for adventure have tried to cross Niagara Falls' ice bridges on foot. But an accident in 1912 put a stop to that.
