The technical term for what happened to Flight 1549 is “bird strike.” This term is used for any occasion when birds and planes collide. It’s a bigger problem than you might think, but an Air Force base in California is using radar to deal with the problem. It was installed one year ago at Beale Air Force Base as part of their "BASH" prevention program. BASH stands for bird aircraft strike hazard. The military started the program about 30 years ago. Lt. Col Kirt Stallings and Capt. Mike Little help oversee it at Beale.
