Some students in Pasadena, Texas got more than just a lesson in physics, when they built a pipe organ entirely from recycled materials. It’s made of recycled electronics, made by students, designed by them as well. It all began with physics teacher Alexander Graham, who loves organs. Organist John Potter thinks it has a good tone. It’s not to be confused with a pipe organ, but it’s economical, accessible, and it introduces the organ to a new generation.
Students in today’s activities will be challenged to design their own musical instrument out of recyclable materials.
Grades: 3rd Grade, 4th Grade, 5th Grade, 6th Grade, 7th Grade, 8th Grade
Subjects: Science
Standards Addressed: Students will describe and use a simple design process used to solve a problem (the environment).
