Featured on Episode 14 of the 2008-2009 season
For more than half a century, Israelis -- who tend to be Jewish - and Palestinians -- who tend to be Muslim -- have been fighting over the same patch of land. Right now, they're fighting in a piece of land called the Gaza Strip. In 2005, Israel withdrew from Gaza and handed over control to the Palestinian Authority. In 2006, the group Hamas won control of the Palestinian legislative council. The next year, Hamas took complete control of Gaza by force. Despite cease fire agreements, members of Hamas are still angry with Israel and have sent rockets into Israeli territory. Nearly two weeks ago, the Israeli government decided to fight back, with rockets of its own. So far, nearly 650 Palestinians have died due to the attacks. Nine Israelis have also been killed. International leaders are trying to broker a cease fire, but neither party seems ready to lay down their arms. Wednesday morning, Israel agreed to a three hour cease fire to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza and is reportedly considering a cease fire agreement brokered by France and Egypt. But Hamas officials would not agree to the plan, because it did not guarantee an end to the Israeli blockade.
