Monarch Butterflies Make Long Trek to Mexico

Posted Thursday, October 23, 2008

Featured on Episode 6 of the 2008-2009 season

Monarch butterflies are the only insects that fly 2500 miles to reach warmer climates. While the parents and grandparents of these butterflies lived only a few weeks, this generation will live for several months while they migrate south, and then start the trip back again. Their great-grandchildren might finally arrive back in Ohio next summer. These monarchs stopped by a landscaping company in Texas where they usually arrive in late September and October. Some Monarch butterflies spend their winters in California and Florida.
