Sunlight Transforms Water from Dirty to Clean

Posted Thursday, September 25, 2008

Featured on Episode 2 of the 2008-2009 season

For most of us in America, getting water is as simple as turning on a tap. But, for millions in developing countries, water can be as dangerous as it is life saving. So, what do you do when there is just no clean water available? David McKenzie found out in the giant slum of Kibera in Kenya that all you need is a bit of sunlight and some clear plastic bottles for a process called SODIS – Solar Water Disinfection.

Lesson Plan

For most of us in America, it is very easy to get a drink. But for millions of people in developing countries, clean water is at a premium. Available water can be as dangerous as it is life saving. So what can they do when there is no clean water available? This week’s NewsDepth features some folks in the giant slum of Kiberia in Kenya who have found an answer. Students in these lessons and activities will discover how they also can purify water with solar energy using the same procedures as Amina Hassan and her family.
