On a group of islands across the world, it's not lava that comes to mind, but rather seal pups. Two months a year, gray seals come to Germany's North Sea island of Helgoland to give birth. Environmentalists have expressed concern about the diminishing gray seal population, which was hunted for centuries. Global warming continues to threaten the endangered seals. While that isn't a huge issue at Helgoland, areas like Canada are not as safe because of diminishing ice. The expected number of seal pups rose by almost one-hundred percent this year at Helgoland.
