The spotted salamander brought the Wetlands Education Team from West Geauga Middle School to an Ohio Senate hearing room last month. The students hoped to call attention to the drastic loss of wetlands in Ohio with a campaign to make the spotted salamander the official state amphibian. The students chose the spotted salamander because it's an indicator species for a healthy ecosystem, and it’s present in most Ohio counties. Students from Central Intermediate School in Medina also stood up for the salamander. The kids did a great job, because Senate Bill 240 passed in the Senate this week and is now on its way to the House.
