Knut the polar bear cub made his public debut Friday at the Berlin Zoo in Germany. People from around the world scrambled to get a chance to see the small, white bundle of joy who was saved by the zoo after his mother rejected him at birth. Earlier this week Knut’s plight made the headlines when an animal rights campaigner was quoted as saying that Knut should not have been kept alive, but Berliners rallied to Knut’s defense. The zoo’s director says he hopes Knut’s star status will draw attention to the dangers of climate change and the melting of the ice on which the polar bears live.
