NewsDepth: About the Program

Learn how you can make the most of using NewsDepth in and out of the classroom with these special tips and activities.

Welcome to a brand new year of NewsDepth as we celebrate our 42nd Anniversary! Winner of a 2011 Communicator Award from the International Academy of Visual Arts, NewsDepth is hosted by ideastream Morning Edition host Rick Jackson.

This 30-minute news program for families and students in grades 3 to 8 airs weekly on WVIZ/PBS ideastream and most of Ohio’s Public Broadcasting stations. Each NewsDepth episode can also be viewed as streamed video or downloaded as an MP4 file on this website. Each NewsDepth story segment is available to watch as streamed video, along with a description of that story and additional web resources. Several of each week’s stories include lesson plans and support materials that are correlated to Ohio’s academic content standards.

Returning this year is the segment called Know Ohio. One of Ohio’s counties is explored each week in words and pictures through its history, geography, and unique cultural attractions. Each NewsDepth episode broadens the horizons of Ohio students with news from around the state, the nation and the world.

Ohio students can be a part of each week’s episode by sending their opinions to . Each week, several letters and emails from viewers are part of the program, and many more are featured in the Speak Out section of the NewsDepth Kids Page. The interactive NewsDepth Kids Page provides an exciting space for students to express opinions and demonstrate involvement in school and community activities.
