When Does Weather Lead A School To Close?

It was a cold one this morning. Temperatures were in the single digits, and we had a wind chill advisory until noon…winds brought lows past -10. Cleveland city schools remained open despite the cold, but others decided to close on account of the weather. It has been a rough winter in terms of school closures, with parents left scrambling for child care or being forced to miss work. But what goes into a closure? Why are some kids expected in the classrooms, and others aren’t?

Shaker Heights Schools were among those that closed today. The district’s superintendent Gregory Hutchings joined ideastream's Tony Ganzer to talk about the decision process behind schools taking "calamity days."

Tony Ganzer has reported from Phoenix to Cairo, and was the host of 90.3's "All Things Considered." He was previously a correspondent with the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation, covering issues like Swiss banks, Parliament, and refugees. He earned an M.A. in International Relations (University of Leicester); and a B.Sc. in Journalism (University of Idaho.) He speaks German, and a bit of French.
