Violence Rising Within Juvenile Detention Center

Featured Audio

It seems the juvenile court system in Cuyahoga County is facing an uptick in violence. The Plain Dealer gained access to juvenile court records which showed in 2013 there were more than 150 cases of assault without a weapon between what are called residents of the detention center. That is much higher than the 50 cases seen in 2010. There were also more threats made against staff—60 instead of 11—in the time period, and also more assaults on staff. To learn more about violence among juvenile offenders ideastream's Tony Ganzer spoke with the Plain Dealer’s Rachel Dissell, who wrote about the trend.

Then, we hear from Juvenile Court administrative judge Kristin Sweeney, about where the system can go from here.
