Two Major Defense Contracts Awarded In Dayton

The U.S. Air Force has awarded a major contract to a Dayton company, Matrix Research. For Ohio Public Radio, WYSO’s Lewis Wallace reports Ohio contractors are getting business despite cuts to the overall military budget.

Matrix Research in Dayton develops sensors and high-tech materials -- in this case, for stealth military aircraft.

The company will get $45 million to work on improving the the Air Force fleet.

Company officials wouldn’t comment, but this is a big score for Matrix.

And just this week, another Dayton-area company announced a $20 million contract from the Marine Corps.

While all this is happening, though, total defense contracts granted in Ohio have actually gone down because of federal budget cuts, and so this market is getting more competitive.

Even with declines, contractors are still taking home way more than they were before the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq: every year since 2006, the Defense Department has granted more than $300 billion to private companies.
