T.J. Lane Sentenced To Life In Prison Without Parole for Chardon Shooting

T.J. Lane will spend the rest of his life in prison for killing three students and wounding three others in last year’s shooting in the Chardon High School cafeteria. ideastream’s Nick Castele reports Lane appeared defiant and at times amused during his sentencing this morning.

Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at 4:39 pm

Lane wore a white t-shirt in the courtroom with the word “killer” scrawled across the chest. When given the chance to speak, his one-sentence remark to the families of the victims was obscene, and he raised his middle finger to the court.

Judge David Fuhry sentenced Lane to life in prison with no possibility of parole.

Dina Parmertor, whose son Danny was killed in the shooting, told Lane in court that he was a monster for whom a life sentence was too easy.

PARMERTOR: “You don’t deserve to take another breath while my 16 year old son Danny lies in the cold ground because of your disgusting, selfish and cowardly actions.”

She said her family had been physically sick because of their stress and grief.

Lane’s attorney Ian Friedman said the defense was prepared to present evidence in favor of mitigating the sentence—but that Lane asked them not to.

Crystal King’s brother Russell was also killed. She said Lane robbed parents everywhere of their sense of safety.

KING: “He took the lives of three young men who were doing what they were supposed to do: go to school. A place your children are supposed to be safe.”

Also speaking were representatives from the family of Demetrius Hewlin, who was killed, and of Nick Walczak, who now uses a wheelchair.

Prosecutors said Lane planned the attack and lacked remorse. Lane was charged as an adult—he couldn’t have faced the death penalty because he was 17 when he committed the murders.
