Statehouse To Again Consider Voter Photo ID Law

The bill to require voters to show photo identification is back again. Statehouse correspondent Karen Kasler reports.

A group of conservative Republican lawmakers announced another attempt to pass voter photo ID, which is backed by the Ohio Christian Alliance. The bill is sponsored by Rep. Andrew Brenner of Powell, who says photo ID would strengthen the system and confidence in it.

"In Ohio, we've got a very good voter system where we're able to verify at least the voters somewhat in Ohio. But we don't know every single one of them, and we cannot verify whether or not they are all residents of the state of Ohio. Having a photo ID will be a way to do that."

Supporters cite recent testimony from Republican Secretary of State Jon Husted, who told a Congressional committee that 436 non-US citizens had registered to vote and 44 actually voted.

But opponents say photo ID just prevents voter impersonation, and doesn't help ensure that only US residents or Ohio residents cast ballots.
