Same-Sex Marriage Activists Hope to Put Issue on Ballot

Supporters of a proposed ballot issue that would legalize same-sex marriage in Ohio are spending Valentines Day demonstrating. They're collecting petition signatures to try to qualify their proposal for this November’s ballot. At courthouses around Ohio, backers have turned out at marriage license bureaus, pointing out that gay Ohioans are denied licenses. At a protest in Columbus, Statehouse correspondent Bill Cohen talked with one gay rights activist, Tom Morgan.

Even though petitioners are trying to collect the required 385,000 signatures with volunteers only, Morgan insisted the advocates can do it by this year’s July deadline.

Morgan is with a group called Get Equal. It says Valentines Day is the perfect time to make the point that gay Ohioans are denied what they call a basic human right, the right to get married.
