The Ohio death row inmate who wants to donate his organs before being executed will not be allowed to do that. Ohio Public Radio’s Jo Ingles explains why.
The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction says Ronald Phillips will not be allowed to donate his organs to his ill mother or another family member. Phillips is set to be executed July 2 for beating, raping and killing Sheila Marie Evans, the three year old daughter of his girlfriend, in Summit County in 1993.
In a news release, the department says prison officials wanted the donation surgery done at least 100 days in advance so Phillips would have time to recuperate before being executed. He was scheduled to be put to death last year but Governor Kasich ordered a delay so this issue could be resolved.
