In 2008, 70 percent of registered Ohio voters cast votes in the presidential election. This year that number was 68 percent.
Cuyahoga County Board of Elections officials estimated that turnout would meet or exceed 2008 levels. In 2008, about 61 percent of registered voters cast ballots in the presidential race. This year, 67 percent did, most casting votes for President Obama. But with all precincts reporting, Cuyahoga County cast 55,609 fewer votes this election. Early in-person voting was down as of election day, too.
Summit County saw a small drop in voter turnout -- down to 72 percent from 74 in 2008.
Lake County has a history of picking presidents -- but not this time. The county went for Romney by about 1900 votes. But turnout was about even -- 75 percent of registered voters cast their ballots, down from 76 percent in 2008, when the county went for Obama.
