Temperatures around Ohio have dipped to record lows, and as the bitter cold continues, advocates for low-income Ohioans note there are several budget payment options from the state, as well as the Winter Crisis Program, which helps people in danger of losing their heat or who have had it disconnected.
Without meeting any income eligibility requirements, that family can get their heat running again for up to $175. There’s also a benefit program for low-income families that pays that fee for them.
Tonja Stewart with the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio says these programs are important for families who have to make important choices between vital services.
“We hear a lot of information in the news about families having to choose between medication (and) food for their families," Stewart said. "So these programs are in place to help families in Ohio especially to provide for their family, provide for their children.”
The Winter Crisis Program is available through April 15.
