More Columbus Principals Fired Over Data Scrubbing

It’s been more than a year since the state auditor accused several Ohio school districts of changing student data to improve state report card scores. But the fallout continues, as Steve Brown of Ohio public radio station WOSU reports.

State Auditor Dave Yost said at least four Ohio districts heavily manipulated data, but he said the Columbus school district was by far the worst.

The latest job casualties came Tuesday night, when the school board voted to fire two high school principals and accept the resignation of a third. All three were put on paid leave in January and have close ties to the alleged data scrubbing. The two fired on Tuesday vowed to fight their firings and say they were only following orders.

Former superintendent Gene Harris retired last year, but has denied any knowledge of fudging attendance data. Prosecutors have not commented on any possible criminal charges against any former or current district employees.
