Let's Study Consolidating Local Governments, Kasich Says

Ohio has about 3,800 local governments, including schools, cities, villages, and townships. Critics say that’s too many, and they’re pushing for consolidations to save taxpayer money. Governor John Kasich said today he and legislative leaders will likely appoint a commission to study the issue.

KASICH: "The issue of consolidation of everything has to be considered. But, I'd have to prove to people what we're going to get from it. I am likely to ask the leaders to appoint a commission to take a look at consolidation, and it's not going to be a commission so we can navel-gaze. It's going to be a commission that's going to look at what they do around the country, what the research has shown, and they'll do their own research."

The House version of a new two-year state budget includes a special fund to reward local governments that consolidate or share services. But the senate version scraps that idea. Negotiators for the House and Senate are now trying to hammer out a compromise budget package.
