Black lawmakers at the Ohio Statehouse have come up with a list of things they want the legislature to accomplish to improve the lives of African American Ohioans.
Democratic State Representative Alicia Reece says the fact is African American Ohioans are not doing as well as others in the Buckeye State.
Reece: "In Ohio, the poverty rate of African Americans is 34. 9 percent. We’ve heard a lot about Ohio turning around and the unemployment rate is only 6.5%, but when it comes to African Americans, the unemployment rate is above 14%, with the unemployment rate for African American males being 16%. In the area of health care, African Americans are 80% more likely to be uninsured than white adults."
The Ohio Legislative Black Caucus wants Ohio lawmakers to pass bills that outlaw credit checks for determining employment, make it easier for ex-offenders to get jobs and work to pass a constitutional amendment requiring pre-kindergarten for every four and five year old in Ohio.
The group also wants lawmakers to pass a bill that they say would make it easier for Ohioans to vote.
