After a 29-year career in Ohio government and politics, Jim Petro will retire Feb. 1 as chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents, overseeing state-supported colleges and universities. In an interview looking back on his long career in public service, Petro tells statehouse correspondent Bill Cohen that he’s proud of helping bring the two bureaucracies that deal with schools and higher education closer together.

Petro was stricken with throat cancer a few years ago, but he says that’s not what is prompting his retirement. He says medical treatment has made him cancer-free, and he’s quitting his government job so he can focus on a relatively new passion -- giving lectures about changing the criminal justice system to hold down the number of people who are wrongly convicted of crimes.
