How Much Water Are Frackers Using In Ohio?

Fracking involves drilling a mile underground and pumping a cocktail of water, sand and chemicals into the shale rock to blast out the natural gas and oil trapped inside. Critics have raised questions about how the volume of water used could affect the environment in the long run. The environmental research group Fractracker Alliance has been mapping oil and gas wells around the state to track the impact. ideastream’s Michelle Kanu spoke with program coordinator Ted Auch about their latest report that shows the average amount of water used in Ohio’s Utica wells.
