House Dems Push For More Public School Dollars In State Budget

Some Democratic state representatives say they want the Governor to provide more funding for Ohio’s K through 12 schools when he presents his education budget tomorrow.

They say they cannot support any efforts to increase funding for charter schools without giving more to public schools. Representative Matt Lundy says he’s also concerned about the possible merit pay plan for teachers.

Lundy: "The whole performance pay issue is basically a mini senate bill five. It’s a back door way of getting in on collective bargaining. Ohioans have been very clear that they support collective bargaining in this state. I think the Governor needs to stay away from that back door approach."

Governor Kasich is set to unveil his school funding proposal tomorrow. While the elements of the plan are not yet known, the Governor has repeatedly said he wants money to follow the students. And Kasich subscribes to some reforms championed by backers of charter schools.
