Whether you call them tax loopholes, tax breaks, or tax incentives, there’s a growing push to examine the several billion dollars’ worth that have mounted up here in Ohio. Three think tanks from across the political spectrum have been calling for a review – the conservative Buckeye Institute, the liberal Center for Community Solutions, and the middle-of-the-road Greater Ohio Policy Center.

Governor John Kasich has endorsed a re-examination also and that’s drawing applause from the three groups. John Honeck is with the Center for Community Solutions. Here he is, talking with statehouse correspondent Bill Cohen.

Honeck: “I’m encouraged and I think our two partner organizations are very encouraged that the governor intends to put tax loop holes on the table and have a serious look at them”

That’s John Honeck of the Center for Community Solutions. He says “although the three think tanks usually disagree on major economic issues, they agree that Ohio’s current tax breaks should be reviewed, any future tax breaks that are handed out should have an automatic sunset date, and Ohio should set up a mechanism for regularly reviewing the effectiveness of all tax breaks.
