Now, three students are dead and one remains hospitalized following Monday’s shooting at Chardon High School. The student believed to have fired on them is being held in juvenile court. Ideastream’s Michelle Kanu reports.

Seventeen-year-old T.J. Lane was arraigned in Geauga County Court this afternoon.  The presiding judge ruled Lane is still too much of a threat to himself and the surrounding community to be released back to his guardian—his grandfather.  Lane will remain in juvenile detention.

County Prosecutor David Joyce says once Lane was taken into custody he admitted firing 10 rounds in the school cafeteria but that Lane said he picked his targets randomly.  Some student eyewitnesses had said it looked like Lane picked out specific students.  Prosecutor Joyce also drew this conclusion today as he spoke with reporters.

Joyce: “this was not about bullying.  This was not about drugs.  This is someone who is not well.”

Prosecutors have until Thursday to decide exactly what charges to pursue against Lane, although Joyce says those charges will most likely be three counts of aggravated murder.

Joyce: “Provided the juvenile court judge finds that there is probable cause then he will be bound over as an adult.”

A third student has now died—eleventh grader Demetrius Hewlin.  Two other students died on Monday.  One victim remains hospitalized and another has returned home.

Chardon Schools Superintendent Joe Bergant says grief counseling is still available for students who need it. Faculty and staff will return on Wednesday and high school students are encouraged to return with their parents on Thursday. All schools will officially reopen on Friday.
