Ohio Fares Poorly In State Tax Comparison

The liberal-leaning group-Policy Matters Ohio-says the study shows Ohioans earning more than $356,000 pay an average of seven percent of their income to taxes. That includes state and local income, property, sales and excise taxes.

Taxpayers in the lowest bracket-making less than $18,000-pay an average of 11.7 percent.

While the highest earners are still paying much larger amount - Wendy Patton from Policy Matters says proportionality matters for the lower earners.

"That 12 percent is much harder on you because it's cutting into very limited income to pay rent-put dinner on the table-put gas in the car."

Greg Lawson from the conservative-leaning Buckeye Institute says-instead of balancing the rate-Ohio should restructure its tax system to promote job growth and lift people out of the lower brackets. That includes lowering the income tax.
