The Director of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections, Gary Mohr, says a review team has been commissioned to analyze the death of inmate Ariel Castro last night at a lockup south of Columbus.

Castro was found hanging in his cell around 9:20 and was pronounced dead at a Columbus area hospital shortly before 11.

The prison review team plans to look at the department’s protocol and determine whether all policies and procedures concerning the delivery of medical and mental health care for Castro were followed.

Castro was admitted to prison last month and placed in protective custody…a level of custody that houses inmates in single occupancy cells and keeps them under close watch with corrections officers checking in on inmates in 30 minute intervals.

Castro was sentenced to life in prison plus 1,000 years for kidnapping and repeatedly raping three young Cleveland women for nearly a decade.
