The Franklin County Coroner confirmed Wednesday that the death of Ariel Castro at a central Ohio prison was a suicide.

The Franklin County Coroner confirmed today that the death of Ariel Castro at a central Ohio prison WAS a suicide.

Castro was a month into serving life without parole plus 1000 years for kidnapping, raping and holding captive three Cleveland women.  He was discovered in his cell Tuesday night hanging by a bed sheet, and was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Castro pleaded guilty in July to 937 counts including kidnapping, rape… and two counts of murder for beating and starving one of his victims until she miscarried her pregnancy.

Some are questioning why Castro was able to kill himself.  Joellen Smith of the Ohio Departyment of Rehabilitation and Correction says Castro was not under suicide watch, but was in protective custody.

Smith:  Rounds are require to be conducted every 30 minutes at staggered intervals.  I just need to emphasize that the entire incident is under investigation.

Just last month convicted murderer Billy Slagle was scheduled to be executed in three days when he hanged himself.  castro’s was the seventh suicide in an Ohio prison this year.
