Consumer Advocacy Group: Opportunity Corridor a 'Boondoggle'

The Opportunity Corridor, a new road that would wind a path through low-income neighborhoods to University Circle, landed that label from the Public Interest Research Group.

Researcher Phineas Baxandall said overall traffic has been largely stagnant in Cuyahoga County for more than a decade, and he doesn't see a good case for putting more than $300 million into a new road.

"There's just so many other ways which seem to be a higher priority for Ohio taxpayer money. The money could be better spent fixing all the bridges in Cleveland. It's more than the whole budget of the transit system."

In an email to the Plain Dealer, the head of the Opportunity Corridor called PIRG's report "misinformed." The project is expected to break ground in the fall.
