As Kasich Pushes Job News, FitzGerald Campaign Pushes Back

Ohio's economic picture is central to the campaigns of Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald and Gov. John Kasich.
Ohio's economic picture is central to the campaigns of Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald and Gov. John Kasich.

Kasich is pushing two pieces of good job news: Procter and Gamble is opening a distribution warehouse near the Dayton airport, and the Fuyao auto glass company is taking over a large part of the old GM plant in Moraine.

"You know, when I think about 800 jobs at Fuyao, I think about 800-plus jobs today at P&G, I think about 1,600 families that are going to do better," Kasich said. "I mean, isn’t that cool? I mean, that’s as good as it gets."

But the campaign for Kasich’s opponent, Democrat Ed FitzGerald, issued a response to the Dayton event, saying the city’s job growth has sputtered since Kasich took office.

This is Lauren Hitt with the Fitzgerald campaign.

"The reality in Dayton is not what Gov. Kasich would like us all to believe that it is," Hitt said. "People in that community have been struggling for years."

Unemployment in Ohio is way down from 2010, but tens of thousands have also left the workforce.

New state numbers out today put the unemployment rate at 5.7 percent in April, a drop from 6.1 percent in March and the lowest rate in Ohio since February 2008.
