University Hospitals and Beachwood City Schools say the venture will better prepare students for medical careers. It’ll be a blend of Honors and Advanced Placement courses with internships and summer course work in UH facilities.
“We know that a sizable number of our students enter careers in medicine or in the sciences, and this is one way that we felt we could partner with a relatively new neighbor in Beachwood," says Richard Markwardt, Superintendent of Beachwood City Schools.
"That is Ahuja Medical Center in the greater University Hospitals system, in trying to capture the resources of both our schools and of that organization toward a common good.”
And PJ Hrehocik, Vice President of Corporate Health for UH, says not everyone in the program needs to become a doctor. She says aspiring researchers, nurses, and administrators can all benefit.
UH and Beachwood City Schools expect to launch the academy in the fall of 2014.
Superintendent Markwardt estimates about 100 students of varying grade levels will be enrolled once the program is underway.
