Ohio's prisons department has taken action in the wake of last week's suicide of Cleveland kidnapper and rapist Ariel Castro. Statehouse correspondent Karen Kasler reports.

Two corrections officers are now on paid administrative leave while the Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections awaits the results of an investigation by the Ohio Highway Patrol into Ariel Castro’s suicide.

A prisons department spokesperson says correction officers Caleb Ackley and Ryan Murphy were on duty in the housing unit at the Orient Correctional Facility south of Columbus, where Castro was being held the night last week he was found hanging from a bed sheet in his cell.

The Franklin County coroner later ruled his death a suicide. Castro was about a month into his life plus one-thousand years sentence. Castro was the second high-profile inmate to commit suicide in an Ohio prison in a month - Billy Slagle killed himself in August, just three days before his scheduled execution. There have been seven suicides in Ohio prisons this year.
