Cordray Confirmation Clears the Democratic Field For Fitzgerald In Governor’s Race

The U.S. Senate has voted to end a two-year Republican blockade against Ohioan Richard Cordray's confirmation as director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. ideastream's Bill Rice reports Cordray's confirmation also affects Ohio's race for governor.

The vote to close debate on Cordray was 71-29. and came minutes after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced a deal with GOP leaders to free up seven stalled appointments of President Barack Obama.

Senators then confirmed Cordray’s appointment 66-34.

Cordray has been considered a possible Democratic candidate for Ohio governor, and his confirmation to lead the federal agency appears to clear the field for Ed FitzGerald to secure the nomination unchallenged.

Cuyahoga County Democratic Party Chairman Stuart Garson says that’s one less obstacle for the county executive as he builds a campaign against incumbent John Kasich.

GARSON:  I think it will be very beneficial to the candidate and to the Ohio Democratic party along with all the county party organizations not to have to go through the costly primaries that take away time and attention away from the big election that comes next fall of 2014.

Fitzgerald posted on his website a statement congratulating Cordray on finally getting his appointment.
