Cuyahoga County Community College President Jerry Sue Thornton is retiring at the end of this school year. Thornton is Tri-C’s third president and steps aside after 21 years in the post.

Thornton says during her tenure she has seen Tri-C evolve beyond its original role as an affordable stepping stone to a four-year college.

“We added two more components over the years,” Thornton says. “One is workforce training and career development.  That’s a huge piece for community colleges nationally, and certainly for Tri-C - trying to align our training with the needs of business and industry.  And the third component is continuing education, such as our corporate colleges.”

A nationwide search is getting underway to fill the post.  Thornton says she and her husband plan to remain in Cleveland, and she’ll serve as long as it takes the college to name a replacement.
