"County Executive Ed FitzGerald has asked for my resignation effective the end of January 2013," the email reads. "It has been my honor to lead this organization for the past 3 1/2 years. I believe I'll leave this organization much better than when I first took office and will value the friendships I've made. Thank you for your dedication and keep up the fine work."
In a statement emailed to media, FitzGerald says he's taking the midpoint of his term in office to review county leadership positions. The email doesn't say specifically why Reid was ousted as sheriff, but reads, "The halfway point of the administration often results in personnel changes."
Reid was named sheriff in 2009, shortly after Gerald McFaul resigned while being investigated for ethics and other violations. When Reid leaves office at the end of January, Frank Bova, who served as interim sheriff between McFaul and Reid, will again assume the post temporarily.
