Frost Brings End Closer for West Nile Virus Cases

Download MP3Early morning frost across Ohio this week is causing state health officials to breathe a sigh of relief. That’s because the cooler weather is causing mosquitoes to disappear, including the bugs that carry West Nile Virus and spread it to humans. Richard Gary is the top bug expert for the Ohio Department of Health. He gave this update to statehouse correspondent Bill Cohen.
The current tally of West Nile cases this year – 93 – is the third largest yearly total since the illness first hit Ohio. That was in 2002, when Ohio recorded the highest number ever --- 441 human cases, including 31 deaths. The next year, there were 108 human cases, the second largest yearly total.
